Started walking in the evenings this last week to try to get into a little better shape. I may try to slowly work it up to jogging, provided my knees don't give me too much trouble. Went for a nice walk Sunday evening in an attempt to find a cut-thru to Walnut Creek Park. I think I may have found one, but I had already been walking for a while and wasn't ready to tackle that much more.

In researching pedometers online, I came across this site. It uses Google Maps as an interface and allows you to plot your path and calculates distance.  My Sunday walk was a good 4 miles, according to their calculations.  Not too bad.

Via [info]griffjon: Go to Wikipedia, enter in your birth date but not the year. List three neat events, three births and three deaths, include the year.

1582 - Due to the implementation of the Gregorian calendar this day does not exist in this year in Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain. (I guess this could be considered a non-event, so I'll thrown in an extra)

1953 - Earl Warren is sworn in as the 14th Chief Justice of the United States.

Apparently when you shave your head, greeting such as "good morning" and "hello" get replaced by "did you lose a bet or something?"

I had totally forgotten that the new Wheel of Time book came out last week. I was reminded of it yesterday when I saw a blurb on a website. After the last few books, hearing that someone liked the book because "things happened" makes me really looking forward to this book. The last book was great, but it was obvious that most of the book was all about making sure all of the pieces were in place for the final push to the end of the story. Now I just have to remember where everyone was (and who they are) at the end of that book two years ago.

So yeah, went to Borders after work last night and picked up that and the new Pratchett book. WoT first, Discworld for dessert.

After eight days of record highs, a cold front has finally pushed its way through the area. High temperature yesterday: 106. Expected high today: around 80. Woot! Now if we could just get some rain...

Well, so much for striking it rich in Vegas. Had a great time, lots of fun, but didn't win jack. We stayed at New York New York, which wasn't even there 10 years ago when I went last. It was a cool place, especially the fake trees in the casino area to make it feel like Central Park.

Also got to go around and see some of the other casinos. MGM Grand had completely redone the inside of their casino and, IMHO, ruined it. BORING! The Bellagio was gorgeous and the Paris was nice as well. Tuesday night we went down to Fremont street to see the older places and catch the light show. The show was cool, but the casinos were less than impressive, and many of the employees were downright rude. Guess that's part of the "charm" of old Vegas.

If anybody else is headed out there, I highly recommend a dinner at the Nine Fine Irishmen pub/restaurant there in NYNY. It's not like the $9.99 steak and lobster or all-you-can-eat buffet type places at other casinos, but the food was awesome, probably some of the best I've ever had at a restaurant.

All in all, I'm glad I went, had a great time, but I don't know that I'll go back. Everything was fun and bright and exciting, but deep down, I couldn't help but think it was also a giant waste. All of the water, all of the power, all of the extravagance, surely it could be put to better use. Millions of gallons of water to make a "volcano" erupt in front of the Mirage, and yet farmers are losing their crops because of drought. Blinding neon everywhere you look, and yet there are rolling blackouts in California. I don't know, it all seems so silly, but then so is most everything our species does.

Just dropping in a few lines so the page doesn't look so blank.

A couple more hours, and I'm done with work for the week and can look forward to my first week-long vacation in I don't know how long. Monday I'll be flying out to Vegas for four days of fun, sun, and getting my money eaten by evil machines with pretty lights.
